Hand-crafted highlights

This short taster cruise has been planned to coincide with a bank holiday and for when the tulips are in bloom, a seasonal event that’s synonymous with the Netherlands. What’s more, there will be two overnight stays in destinations that offer traditional Dutch experiences.
In Amsterdam, there’s a chance to meet a tulip grower at a local farm before heading to see the colourful tulips in bloom at Keukenhof Gardens. Alternatively, you can capture the sights of the capital on a boat tour of the famous canals.
Rotterdam is the gateway to the Netherland’s iconic windmills. Borealis will transit the Nieuwe Maas river, the North Sea Canal and through Amsterdam’s canal lock.

Clog making in Amsterdam

The Dutch way of life

Life in the Netherlands often involves around cycling, due to the extensive network of bike paths laced through the towns and cities. In Amsterdam, join a tour to discover the beautiful tulip fields and learn about the cultivation of the bulbs in Keukenhof Gardens. Traditional wooden clogs, or ~klompen”, are a part of Dutch culture and can be seen in many of the towns as a symbol of the country, more than used as footwear nowadays. You can take the opportunity to enjoy a clog making workshop at a local farm, to learn how they are made and create your own souvenir piece. No visit to the Netherlands would be complete without sampling delicious dishes such as stroopwaffels, cheese and bitterballen – tasty meatballs made as a snack and perfect with a Dutch beer.

Cube houses on the harbour in Rotterdam, Netherlands

Bold Architecture

A mix of traditional and modern design, architecture in the Netherlands is a joy to explore. In Amsterdam you’ll find picturesque canal houses standing tall with ornate facades and using every inch of available space; whereas in Rotterdam the intriguing Cube Houses are unique examples of architectural expression, and the mirrored Museumpark with a green oasis at its peak contributes to the city’s vibrant cultural scene. You’ll be joined on this cruise by architect and architectural historian, Thom Gorst, who will explain how the two cities had very contrasting approaches to architecture in the twentieth century: Amsterdam celebrates a more traditional approach, whilst Rotterdam has become a hotbed for modern architecture.
